Weekly guide a wine lover's wine $ 10 - An Alsatian (France) Sylvaner

For many years I have appreciated and considered Many wines from Alsace, France with their distinctively shaped bottles and sometimes but not always, their distinctive taste. This is the first time in memory I recently found one for less than $ 10. I want to say something about the limit price. I live in Ontario, Canada where wine prices tend to be slightly higher than in many parts of the United States. Our dollar fluctuates and I do not want to cut a wine because the Canadian dollar edged up a bit. Then I said about $ 10 when it is floating near the boundary.

Alsace is a relatively small region wine. Its wine growing area just 60 miles (100 kilometers) long and more than 2.5 miles (4 km) wide seat on the German border in the east. Almost all white wines. Although Sylvaner is quite widely planted, it is not considered a grape fine Alsace and elsewhere. For $ 10 you expect to obtain a fine grape of the region so dear in a wine-producing country dear? However, this wine could well end up being a bargain.

Let's start with the marketing materials. Tasting note: Pale straw color, Light floral aromas with hints of pear and melon notes and bright fresh green apple, lime and herbs on the palate, crisp, clean finish. Suggestion: seafood or fish, quiche, etc. .. And now for my review.

I started drinking the wine alone. It was slightly sweet, rather long and slightly acidic. The first meal of smoked turkey thighs were cooked with chickpeas. The wine was Appley and refreshing, but one-dimensional and light.

The second meal was a shepherd pie commercial. Now, Sylvaner flavors to Once lemony appely. Its acidity is quite good, but the length was inconsistent. When I added a little hot pepper Turkish, it became harder and has not been exceeded. It is by no means the hot sauce that I love (even if both share the name of Harissa). I can only wonder how This wine would handle the spiciness of the real thing.

The last meal of meatballs slow cooked chicken with wheat. The wine has become more round and was strongly acidic, tasting of citrus fruit. It was clean palate.

I finished tasting the two cheeses. The first cheese was an Italian-style cottage cheese with ricotta. It was difficult to define the fruit wine, perhaps currants. The wine has become a little softer. This wine and cheese pairing was above average. Then I went to Provolone. Sylvaner is citrus, slightly long, with a pleasant acidity.

final verdict. I would buy this wine again. It does qualify as a bargain. You can easily pay much more for wines of Alsace and does not get better. But this is not a wine to love.
