Wine Collars – How to Keep Tabletops Dry

The right tools can make all the difference when you are enjoying the experience of sharing a bottle of wine with friends. That could include different corkscrews, wine glasses, coasters, and wine collars. These are basic wine accessories that fit around the neck of a wine bottle. The purpose is to absorb any drip that could potentially run down the side of the bottle after pouring, preventing stains on the table. These may also be known as drip collars or drip rings, in some places.  For anyone who has spilled wine on a white tablecloth in the past, you may be aware of how useful this tool can be.

Today's designers have invented a wide spectrum of different types of wine collars, meaning that there is something to fit every bottle of wine and every mood that you may  have. Some of the most popular types are the Laguiole foil cutter, heart shaped foil cutter, and magnetic wine collars. Magnetic collars are unique in that they can have metal closures, for a greater ease in slipping them on and off of the bottleneck. These may come in a variety of different shapes, colors, and materials, but some of the most common are metal rings.

Although wine collars date back over one hundred years, the design has varied very little in terms of its basic function. The first wine collar was attributed to the inventor W.R. Miller, who was issued a patent in 1872 for a drip cup. Today, the most basic design for collars is a plastic or silver ring, which is lined with felt that will help absorb the drip. Because these can be hard to clean, the wine collar will need to be replaced every so often, to make sure that you don't have too much fermented wine in your collar.

If you have any wine lovers that you are trying to purchase gifts for, you might want to think about various wine accessories, including wine collars. These make great gifts, and can even be engraved or customized. Because it's something that must be replaced from time to time, it is always a good time to give a wine collar. These make good stocking stuffers, or could be given in combination with other wine accessories or even a nice bottle of wine.
